GARDENS OF MIND AND MYTH [ A GROUP SHOW ]

AMY WRIGHT / LIZ WICKRAMASINGHE / EMMA ITZSTEIN

AMY WRIGHT .

www.amywright.com.au @amywrightstudio

‘Sacred Ground’ is a body of work in which Wright embraces a naive and fauvist approach. Each canvas is it’s own Wunderkammer, holding a world that morphs imagination and myth. Texture and colour are paramount, with landscapes laden with gold and treasures. Plants are depicted wildly as though embroiled in a blooming battle. The collection nods to the gardens and places of Greek legend, namely the fantastical Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Here gardens are tiered and towering and the horizon is masked from view by teeming foliage and flora.

Wright has a preoccupation with capturing abandon landscapes; the discarded, ignored and untamed. Here Wright imagines these sacred gardens with a childlike wonder. Canvases weave the fables and mythical stories from childhood. Plants are tangled and exuberant as they jostle for their foothold. A play of memory and imagination saturates the landscapes. Fictitious blooms are captured in jolts of unexpected and joyful colour. Heavily textured surfaces, ceramic details, and thick application of oil paint draws the viewer into the frame, further emphasising dense blooming Labyrinths that open out to expansive terraces just beyond.

Wright is a Geelong based landscape painter with a diverse creative background in textiles, sculpture and floral design. Her work sits between abstract and semi figurative, and looks to capture the often unnoticed or disregarded in a botanical landscape. Her works are tactile, with textural surfaces and patterning being integral to Wright’s process.

LIZ WICKRAMASINGHE .

www.lizwickrama.com / @lizwickrama

Liz Wickramasinghe is a visual artist who uses printmaking, painting and drawing techniques in her work. With a background in both Fine Art and Design disciplines, Liz’s work combines a range of processes and theoretical approaches to explore the patterns, geometries and colour she finds around her.  A variety of artistic approaches are apparent in Liz’s art works featuring in the group exhibition, “Gardens of Mind and Myth”. Each work is an unique exploration, encompassing imagined, abstracted and rearranged landscapes and botanical compositions, exploring the juxtaposition of natural and built environments with the incorporation of subtle architectural cues and structural motifs. Liz is inspired by her ever-growing collection of house plants and the bush-lands, wetlands, old farms and new suburbs she lives amongst. Botanical features like leaves, blossoms, bark, roots and grasses are composed alongside geometric lines, form and pattern. Her works explore ideas of interconnectedness and the intricate networks in biodiverse ecosystems. Imagery and patterns are built-up and peeled-back to reveal and conceal complex layers in Liz’s work. A combination of intuitive, fluid and procedural approaches and more precise hand-finished detail often result in unexpected and beautiful visual outcomes.

Liz’s practise, like her visual motifs, reflect a tension that is ever present in our environments, both constrained and natural.

Liz works from her studio at home on the Bellarine Peninsula, and teaches at secondary schools in the region. She and her husband are raising two young kids.

EMMA ITZSTEIN .

www.emmaitzstein.com @emmaitzstein

Itzstein’s travels to Italy and visits to the gardens of Villa Melzi in Lake Como was the catalyst for her collection. The private summer residence at Bellagio was built in neo-classical style during the Napoleonic era, set off by steep sloping gardens and exotic trees. Egyptian sculptures and Roman statues line the winding paths that whisk the wanderer to tranquil Japanese ponds surrounded by maple and cedar trees. Inspired by the deep symbolism of these vast gardens, Itzstein’s work returns to the notion of nature as sacred and divine.

Emma Itzstein is a self-represented multi-disciplinary artist based in Geelong. After being recognised for her ‘unique-state' printmaking in her hometown of Perth, she has been exploring painting as a medium since relocating to the east-coast, as a way of loosening up and embracing a more expressionistic practice. Itzstein's work centres on ideas around psychological and philosophical states of mind, often using nature, still life and portraiture as symbols to communicate meaning. Juxtaposed styles and compositions and layers of medium are used in interplay to bring deeper meaning to her works - a consistent thread between her printmaking and painting practice.
